PR-02

The PR-02 is a smarter approach to reduce smartphone addiction among key users. It leverages emergent academic research theory such as the construction of a routines, constant user encouragement and sensory device obstruction to achieve its primary purpose. The physical design of the PR-02 is inspired by the Swedish company Teenage Engineering, which forces a distinctive ID and interaction rich interface on the primary front plate of the device. The PR-02 is a reimagining of the conventional phone lock box created through a research through design process.
The process of creating the PR-02 was informed with a research through design methodology with all sketching, modelmaking and ideation directed by formal academic insights. These ideation methods provided a base line for the design process and addressing the highly complex problem space of phone addiction. All of this development resulted in an appearance model produced from the actual sheet metal as a realistic representation of the product beyond product visualization.

PR-02 User Journey

1.
At the start of the week the user selects the date to reduce their smartphone usage
2.
They then input smartphone lock away time with the top interface switches

3.
When the set time comes the speaker beeps to indicate its time to lock away their device

4.
The user places their device in the front section of the PR-02

5.
Top cover is then slid over the device to begin the lock away period

6.
If the user is successful the corresponding LED’s light up to show progress
Manufacturing the PR-02

Manufacturing of the PR-02 has been optimized and designed to match the existing processes of Teenage Engineering. The outer covers of the device are produced from laser cut and bent aluminum, finished with a powder coating to offer distinctive RAL indexed colour iterations. The container for the phone is produced from injection moulded ABS plastic with a leather insert at the base providing a soft surface for resting the addictive phone.
Assembling the PR-02 is contained with all parts mounted to the respective sheet metal component with the final stage resulting in just 4 bolts holding the 2 sheet metal parts together. This streamlines the assembly process by reducing costs without reducing the quality of the overall product.
