Reframing the potato masher to be a center piece within a modern kitchen to encourage conversation and prestige. With a lesser focus on functionality the abstract forms can be explored through emergent additive manufacturing techniques and generative design principles.

Voromasher is an exploration of 2 paradigms, kitchen utensils and advanced manufacturing techniques. The great contrast of these paradigms is reflected in the static design language of kitchen utensils and particularly potato mashers, which feature a base 2 prongs and a handle. Conversely 3D printing technologies are constantly evolving with innovation driving interest.

This contrast is where the Voromasher positioned, by connecting a static instrument with a HP MJF 3D printing process results in a completely abstract design language. The manufacturing process is reflected with the utilization of a variable lattice for adding visual prominence and making a statement.

An initial concept of the Voromasher, which captured the original design intent, however with ergonomic limitations.


Reframing the Masher

Inspiration was found in Italian design and the beauty of everyday objects, with the objective of a creating a beautiful artefact in contrast to a purely functional kitchen utensil. The Voronoi lattice was selected early on as the primary distinctive feature of the product in a world of ‘sameness’.

Voromasher Manufacturing and Appearance Model

The Voromasher is produced from a food grade PA-12 on a HP Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) process. The design has been optimized for lightweighting with the inclusion of a Voronoi lattice. The shape has also been adjusted to package a collection of Voromashers in a single HP printers’ bed.
